When you can attract a key client to become a key member of your staff, you know you’re doing something right.
Kathy Dodd, Account Manager for Medstar, had been happily working for the Waitemata Primary Health Organisation for 9 years when Bill Hines, Managing Director of Medstar, persuaded her to come and work for him instead.
Kathy’s introduction to Medstar and Bill came about during her tenure at the Waitemata PHO, where she and the team she led looked after 50 GP and Medical Centre practices from Devonport to Wellsford.
Bill and the Medstar team have earned a solid reputation over the years, specialising in supplying health service providers with IT hardware and software solutions, and technical support since 2003.
Kathy’s clients would often ask her for recommendations for ideal IT suppliers. Although not directly allowed to recommend any one particular supplier, by sharing feedback from other medical professionals, it was clear that Medstar came out on top.
A chance meeting with Bill one day during a client visit had Kathy joking, “I may very well work with you one day, Bill Hines.” Little did Kathy know just how much of a prediction that statement was going to be.
Two years later, Bill reminded her of her quip, and offered her a job.
“They were so obliging, because I had to complete my time at Waitemata, which was another 5 months. It really showed me what the company was like; so considerate and full of integrity.”
Kathy still spends her days visiting the GP’s and Medical Centres. But now she’s able to directly sell the unique benefits of Medstar’s specialised IT solutions. Her 20 years’ experience in health services makes her the consummate Account Manager, having a deep understanding of the specific needs of the medical professionals she supports every day.
“Medstar has always had very close relationships with our clients,” says Bill Hines. “We like to feel we are part of the team with each and every one of them. Kathy has always been one of our biggest fans, and when we decided that the growth in our business meant we needed an awesome person to join, it was a natural decision to invite Kathy on board. The knowledge and experience she brings to our team is tremendous and allows me to focus on the business with the confidence she will look after the day-to-day operations. Kathy has already made a huge difference in her first few months and I'm very pleased she is part of our growing organisation.”
A key element to Medstar’s continued success is its incorporation into the New Zealand Technology Group in 2013. Being able to draw on the Groups’ wealth of knowledge, expertise and technical resources has allowed Medstar to not only grow and strengthen its existing areas of specialty, but extend its service offering in all areas of IT and Communications.
“It’s interesting being employed by Medstar but be surrounded by other New Zealand Technology Group companies,” says Kathy looking around from her desk. “We all work very well together and offer each other a huge amount of support. It’s a great example of what a one-stop-shop should be like. It’s great to see it work, and work very well.”
